Beschreibung

Beschreibung des Angebots

The Master of Science in Behaviour, Evolution and Conservation is for students who wish to deepen their knowledge in ecology, behavioural ecology, evolutionary biology and conservation biology, as well as to develop relevant technical, quantitative and research management skills.

Students' personal research projects account for 50% of the credits towards the degree, chosen from a diverse range of projects that may involve field work, laboratory experiments, genomics, computation or modelling, in a broad range of animal, plant and microbial systems.

This knowledge builds the foundations for evidence-based biodiversity management and conservation strategies.

Possibility of specialisation in:

  • Behaviour, Economics and Evolution
  • Computational Ecology and Evolution
  • Geoscience, Ecology and Evolution (in collaboration with the Faculty of Geosciences and Environment)

Studies description

The Master program has a normal duration of 4 semesters and comprises 120 ECTS.

The first semester of studies consists of compulsory covering conceptual and methodological aspects. The knowledge and skills acquired will be applied in the context of a small individual research project.

From the second semester, the program consists of a personal Master research project, a field course and optional courses dedicated to evolution, evolutionary genetics, animal behaviour and conservation biology. Several courses can be chosen from other Master’s programs.

Within the framework of the master, it is possible to follow the general program or choose one of three specialisations. Some compulsory and optional courses will be common to all specialisations, while others will be specific to the chosen specialisation.

Perspektiven

Career prospects

The strong quantitative skills developed in the Master are very sought after, for example, in public health, whereas the orientation towards biodiversity provides a good basis for students who want to become biology teachers. As such, this program serves as a foundation for potential careers in :

  • Academic research
  • Museums
  • Conservation Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs)
  • Federal research stations and offices
  • Public services for environmental protection
  • Private applied ecology or genetic service companies

Secondary Education Diplomas I and II

The Master's degree in Behavior, Evolution, and Conservation is among the qualifications automatically recognized for teaching biology at the secondary level II.

Under certain conditions, students may also combine the MAS/teaching diploma for secondary level II with the Master of Arts/Science in Teaching for secondary level I.
