Beschreibung des Angebots

The Master of Science in Human Taphonomy is intended for students who are interested in the mechanisms and challenges related to the decomposing human body and the associated biological, ethical and environmental issues, including public health risks.

The Master programme provides in-depth knowledge of the relation between human beings and their dead, as well as the post-mortem management of human remains across space and time. It also provides advanced teaching on the interactions between the human cadaver and its environment in forensic, humanitarian and societal contexts.

Le Master en taphonomie humaine s'adresse à des étudiant-e-s qui s'intéressent aux mécanismes et défis liés à la décomposition des corps humains ainsi qu'aux questions biologiques, éthiques et environnementales associées, y compris les risques pour la santé publique.

Le Master fournit des connaissances approfondies sur la relation entre les êtres humains et leurs morts, ainsi que sur la gestion post-mortem des restes humains dans l'espace et le temps. Il offre aussi une formation avancée sur les interactions entre le cadavre humain et son environnement dans des contextes médico-légal, humanitaire et sociétal.

Organisation des études

The first semester of studies consists of compulsory courses covering both conceptual and methodological aspects linked to human anatomy and the management of dead bodies. The acquired knowledge and skills will be put to use in three small projects done in pairs.

The second semester consists of compulsory courses, field courses, demonstrations and visits devoted to the immediate surroundings of the decomposing human body. The acquired knowledge and skills will be applied in the context of two small projects done in pairs.

The third semester consists of compulsory courses, on-site demonstrations, medical operations and visits dedicated to the forensic management of dead bodies. Communication workshops and seminars will teach participants how to present human taphonomy. The acquired knowledge and skills will be used in the design of a specialised website focusing on a forensic discipline.

The fourth semester is dedicated to the completion of the personal Master research project.

Le master représente le second diplôme universitaire après le bachelor et équivaut généralement à l’acquisition de 90-120 crédits ECTS.

Voraussetzungen

Zulassung

  • Baccalauréat universitaire ès Sciences en biologie, en médecine, en science forensique ou dans un domaine considéré comme équivalent délivré par une haute école universitaire suisse.

Un autre grade ou titre universitaire peut être jugé équivalent et permettre l’accession au master, avec ou sans conditions.

La haute école est responsable pour l'admission (voir "Liens sur l'admission")

Les conditions suivantes sont également demandées pour ce master:

  • Have successfully completed the course evaluations (including theory and practice) for all fields listed below, and obtained a minimum of 40 ECTS (or equivalent):
    • Basic Sciences (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry) (minimum 15 ECTS)
    • Statistics and Computer Sciences
    • Biochemistry, Cell, Tissue and Molecular Biology (minimum 10 ECTS)
    • Physiology, Functional Imaging and Microscopy.
  • Provide evidence of C1 level of English according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR, or equivalent). The results of an IELTS, TOEIC or TOEFL test must be included in the application file.
  • Provide evidence of taphonomic experience: at least 6 weeks full-time, including at least 4 weeks in the field of human taphonomy (internships, practical work, professional experiences, etc.), in the form of a reflective analysis written in English
